Whether music is over the airwaves in a store, or heard by a customer on hold, background music immediately sets a unique mood.
Considerable studies have been done in recent years about how background music affects people. Studies have shown that background music can even influence customers into impulse purchases.
Specific genres become emotional triggers and in the study customers in a restaurant reacted to American oldies by ordering hamburgers and hot dogs, and when classical music was played their tastes became much more refined. The results go on to state that the music invoked specific memories and emotions for the participants.
In 2015 a scientific study done last year identifies the correlation between memory function and music and that participants reacted differently based on their age group. Their findings indicated that the younger generations were not as distracted by the background music while responding to a memory test while the older adults did not perform as well under the same conditions. The results suggest that the younger age groups may be more adept at multitasking.
